With so many options today for straightening teeth, sometimes it can be difficult deciding on the right option for you. Traditional metal braces have been the standard for many years and give the orthodontist a predictable, accurate way to move teeth. Many developments have been made to make braces less visible on the teeth.

Clear braces have the benefit of blending in more with the teeth without sacrificing the ability to control the teeth. These braces are made of ceramic that match the color of the teeth. The brackets are much less visible but the wire is metal and remains seen.

Clear aligners have become popular and are a good option for minor orthodontic problems. The trays are worn day and night and are replaced with a new set every 2-3 weeks. Because they are made of thin plastic, aligners are not able to “grip” the tooth like braces, which results in less control of the tooth movements. Aligners are less noticeable than ceramic or metal braces but are still visible.

Lingual braces combine the control of traditional metal braces with excellent aesthetics. Lingual brackets are glued to the back-side of the teeth rather than the front and are totally concealed. This type of treatment does require extra equipment and time, which adds to the cost of treatment, but may be worth it for patients who want excellent results without being able to see the braces.
